Gold Medals Worth Cash
The Chinese won 51 gold medals, which was more than any other country competing in the 2008 games.
In contrast, Kenya’s gold medalists receive a cash prize, a TV, and a washing machine.
It seems that the Greek athletes are paid the most handsomely. All medal winners receive payouts. Gold medalists will receive 190,000 euros ($280,000 USD), 130,000 euros for silver ($260,000 USD), and 70,000 euros for bronze medals ($140,000 USD).

Gold – Spiritual Meanings Increase Value?
The article cites jewelry designer, David Weitzman, a spiritual gold jewelry designer since 1998. Weitzman uses mathematics and sacred shapes such as the Seed of Life, the Flower of Life and the Tree of Life in his designs. He also incorporates oriental cultures, which are believed to be powerful and rewarding. Weitzman’s jewelry links in to these beliefs. Weitzman takes symbols from different cultures and incorporates them in his designs and then further energizes them through meditation so that the jewelry obtains properties of self-balance and healing. These traits add to the uniqueness and sacredness of his gold pieces. Gold is universally linked to the sun, due to its color.
Weitzman’s gold jewelry’s spiritual effects are described in further detail at ka-gold-jewelry.com. The word ‘ka’ means the “life force of the human spirit”.

Olympic Gold - What's It Worth?
Up until 1912, the Olympic Gold medals were made of solid gold. No longer the case.
The gold, silver and bronze medals are 2.5 inches wide and .12 inches thick.
Since 1912, the gold and silver medals awarded are actually made up of mostly silver. The gold medal is coated with approximately a quarter of an ounce of 24kt gold.
The bronze medal also contains trace amounts of silver, but is composed of mostly copper, zinc and tin.
The 2008 Beijing Olympic medals have an image of Nike, the goddess of victory, on its obverse, and the Beijing Olympic emblem – inlaid with jade - on the reverse.
According to current gold values, the Olympic gold medals have a worth of about $300…….

Gold Rally - Alternative to Cash?
This week, we saw a gold rally in Asia – due to physical buyers and the dollar experiencing a fall. Bloomberg has declared that bullion is, indeed, an attractive alternative asset.
Much of this is due to the dollar weakening against both the euro and the yen. Internationally, the demand has soared this past month. Analysts are predicting that gold will remain between $850 to $900 an ounce for the next few months of 2008.
Gold has additionally been supported due to the rise in crude oil, which, as of Wednesday was sitting at $116.48 a barrel.

Gold Rush, Cash to Follow For Phelps
As the Olympics come to an end, Michael Phelps has another gold rush headed his way. This time – the gold is worth mega bucks, and he’ll be able to turn it into cold, hard cash.
After setting a new gold standard in Beijing, the advertising industry has taken notice of Michael Phelps. Not since Tiger Woods, has the sports marketing industry become so enamored with an individual athletes.
Last week’s USA Today interviewed several professionals in the sports marketing and advertising profession to get the industry’s feedback. Apparently, Phelps is looking at a variety of opportunities including endorsement deals, TV commercials, licensing, and public speaking gigs. Phelps mother, Debbie, is also being approached about a book and was already dubbed the official “Baby Mom” of the Games by Johnson & Johnson.
The eight gold medal win could be worth up to $50 million. Phelps currently has sponsorships with Visa, AT&T and Speedo that will more than likely carry over to the 2012 London Olympic Games, where Phelps has already stated he will be swimming again.

Gold - Better Cash Than The Dollar?
According to AE, the dollar has lost 81% of value since 1971. Measured against gold, the dollar has lost 95% of value.
Until August 15, 1971, a US dollar represented backing of 1/35 ounce of gold. By 1973, following the Nixon administration, the dollar’s value had sunk to 1/64 of an ounce of gold.
The blog asks the question in today’s shaky economic situation, “Can gold lose dollar value even as the dollar itself loses purchasing poser?”. AE says yes, and that we have the Fed to thank for this – due to the stock market bubble bursting followed by the collapse of the real estate market. As a result of all of this economic meltdown, gold and the dollar could “simultaneously weaken”.
Consumers have flooded to gold as economic uncertainty has increased. The last peak of gold was on March 17 for $1,011 an ounce. The ‘lows’ recently have reached about $835 and could possibly go lower, however economists believe that we have not seen the peak of gold as measured against its 1981 price adjusted for inflation.
AE goes on to describe that the two factors that help the price of gold are (1) inflation and (2) war. To read the entire article, click here.

Global Heritage Fund Developing an International Gold Standard
This week, the Palo Alto Times reported on the Global Heritage Fund’s presence and work in Pingyao China.
Jeff Morgan, who is founder of the Global Heritage Fund (in Palo Alto) carried the Olympic torch through the Shanxi province of China and was the only foreigner to do so. Morgan was chosen because of his efforts through the Global Heritage Fund to preserve and restore the city of Pingyao, an ancient city once at the center of Chinese banking – about 400 miles outside of Beijing – 5 centuries old and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Morgan continues his efforts in rebuilding cities around the world. There are 40 other cities that are planned for the next ten years. Morgan cites that, in some areas, people are quick to sell out and ruin their areas – literally having gold mines in their back yards and being quick to sell without maintaining the beauty and history of the area.
The Global Heritage Fund finds Third World countries that can preserve historical and local aspects in order to improve their economic state with properly managed tourism.
What do you think? Preserve beauty, or cash in?

Going For Gold...
We’re on board. We’re putting our money on Michael Phelps in Beijing.
Phelps has now won a career total of nine summer Games gold medals, putting him in the same category as Carl Lewis. He is moving forward to break Mark Sptiz’s record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics. The 23-year old has sparked the US swimming gold rush.
According to teammate Aaron Peirsol, "The way he (Phelps) is attacking this meet - he isn't just winning he is destroying world records on the way."
Phelps has made even his opponents sing his praises. Park Tae-Hwan, the South Korean silver medalist to Phelps, claimed “Phelps swam so fast. It’s my honor to compete with him”.
The eight gold medal quest continues. Check back with us--we'll be waiting to see if he becomes the king of the gold.

Gold Used As Commodity in Crisis Situation
Rockefeller bought the coins in the name of Clark Rock at Boston Bullion. The owner of the shop where Rock bought the coins stated that the value of the coins existed in that they could be used anywhere in the world due to the immediate cash out value and ability to sell the gold anywhere.
Evidently, Rockefeller has had a history of buying other items with traded gold in the past, including a sailboat. Rockefeller has since been apprehended by the Boston Police and is being held without bail in the kidnapping.
