A very funny article featured here at ESPN.com notes the estimated melt value of the Vince Lombardi trophy, which in reality is actually priceless owing to its immeasurable sentimental value and the great athletic accomplishment that it represents.
Based upon the current price of silver, the 22-inch tall, seven-pound sterling silver statuette has a melt value of approximately $1,450. Melt value refers only to the quantity of actual precious metals included in an item and does not account for artistic, historic, or sentimental value. In the case of the Super Bowl trophy, its fine craftsmanship, as well as its historical value and the tremendous athletic achievement it represents clearly make it infinitely more valuable than its mere melt value.
