Gold Bars—Just Because!

Jean Paul Gaultier has long been a boundary-pushing fashion designer. Gaultier has teamed up with a Texas metal company to create gold bars emblazoned with his name across a cartoonish heart. Gaultier is the first fashion icon to create a personalized line of gold. The theory behind marketing a sale? Gold is an element that continues to gain in value. By giving the gift of gold or buying a piece for yourself, you are essentially making an investment.Which would you rather get as a gift—a gold bracelet or a gold Gaultier bar?

Luxury ATM Dispenses Gold

India has certainly grown economically through the past few years, and proof of that lies in their new luxury ATMs, which dispense gold, diamonds, and silver jewelry. Bars of precious metal hang alongside diamond studded jewelry, among other luxuries.

The idea behind the machines? To offer last minute luxury gifts for the wealthy Indian citizens. Such as the husband who forgot about Valentine’s Day or an anniversary.

Depending on specifications for desired objects of the customer, the prices can range anywhere from $20 to $610. Naturally, credit and debit cards are accepted.

TOO MUCH GOLD?

This week, Reuters reported that the world’s largest gold refinery, Rand Refinery Ltd, has run out of South African Krugerrands.

The Krugerrands were first introduced in 1967 at the South African Mint.   The blanks of the Krugerrand are supplied by Rand Refinery, and minted by the government.

The sold out status is apparently due to an “unusually large” order from an anonymous buyer in Switzerland.  Who is the buyer, and what does this mean?

The order was for 5,000 ounces.  This size order took from August 28th to September 3rd for inventory replenishment.

Gold coins and gold bullion bars have become more popular with investors as a hedge against inflation.  Apparently, conflict between Russia and Georgia has increased demand as well.

Demand of gold is 25% higher this year than last with investor demand up for gold collectible coins and gold bars.
